"After lots of research myself, I have the Viofo A119 mini 2 that has the Sony Starvis 2 sensor and it’s been great (my SD card is a 64gb SanDisk MAX Endurance). I like that it’s compact, and always works. It’s worked during the summer (95+°F days) and even with it freezing overnight now it’s had no issues. I determined in my research that this one was the best value for the money and anything with better video quality at even $300 was going to have negligible benefits. "I don't get that either. If the driver's line of sight is looking through or around the rearview mirror, something is wrong. I put a Thinkware Q1000 in one car last year, and it hides behind the rearview mirror even better than the Viofo A129. "I've been having an issue ever since weather has even moderately warmed up: the A229 Pro powers on when I start the car, but within a minute, chimes noise as it powers back down. No type of indicator showing an overheat issue or any other error codes. If I unplug the cord and plug it back in, it will stay on the rest of the drive. This is not an issue that ever happens when its below 60 degrees outside. Only when it is warm and the sun is out. For reference I reformatted my SD card and I have been using viofo wires and the viofo cigarette lighter adapter for power. Very frustrating since it ruins the reliability of having a dash cam. Given the cost of the A229 pro, it should run flawlessly."

"I have the Viofo A129 Duo Plus. I have the screen set to shut off after 30 seconds. It only comes on again if it records an "emergency" or if I push the button on the dash cam."

Still works great and I'm in the habit of reading license plates for the audio. Still better to have a dash than not have one."

"I disagree even the best dashcams can't read the plates all the time. That's why you use the audio and speak it. Lighting, angle, windshield debris, speed , vibration all impact the ability to read plates. I had a cheap TAO 1080p that has no bells or whistles, couldn't keep time but video was good and I think it read plates more clearly than the 2k Thinkware q800 pro I had upgraded to back in 2019. Kind of makes sense since all processing was for the video and nothing else. Whereas my Thinkware has GPS, parking mode, speed warning etc so not all CPU is dedicated to video. I still see people with 4K still asking for help with trying to determine license plates. The video needs to at least be clear enough to make out traffic lights. If the camera can't do that, than absolutely don't buy it. Camera will be useless if you need to determine if you had the green light or not."

Mount it as high up on the windshield as possible (better view & less sun exposure. He asked for a screen recording of the problem I was having, was able to diagnose the problem right away, and helped me fix it (turns out, I was using the old app, not the new one--not a difficult problem to fix but certainly was not obvious to me). He continued the conversation through to its completion, even responding to my final email where I gave him feedback on the product. So far, I'm glad I chose Rove dashcams for our cars. "I have my blackvue 970x+ 2ch hardwired in to 2 fuses in an interior fuse box in my truck and can say, after 5 months of continuous use in every condition possible, do not get a blackvue 970x+ 2ch. "I do exactly this now when I travel. I recently got a Viofo VS1 Mini. It comes with these plastic sheets that stick to the windshield. You just stick the dashcam to the sheet instead of directly on the windshield. To remove the dashcam you just peel the sheet which comes off fairly easily. Once removed, I clean the plastic carefully and put the protective film back on it so it stays clean until I put it in another car."

"I have a Vantrue N4 in one car and Viofo A229 Pro in another car. If I were to do it again I’d get the Viofo in both cars. I like that the Viofo sits right against the windshield flush and is more low profile than the Vantrue. The Vantrue is quite bulky in its current form and obstructs my view a bit. I like that the Viofo has an app that you can use to pull footage without having to pull the SD card. I think the Viofo has better video quality, partly because the camera lens sits closer to the windshield than the Vantrue. Also I can run 4K with a front/rear setup where I cannot with the Vantrue (only 2k when running front/interior/rear). The Viofo comes with a polarizing filter which makes glare less of an issue which I’ve had in the Vantrue. I do like the voice command with the Viofo even though they can be inconsistent. I don’t know anything about the Viofo longevity, I’ve only had it a few months. My Vantrue hasn’t let me down in 2 years (including parking mode). But I do like the Viofo more so far for the above reasons."

"I hardwired my first dashcam (Rexing V1Pro), and the wiring didn’t have a functioning (or good) voltage cut off. I ended up draining my battery, twice. I think that’s the extent of the “damage” that I think you would see. As many have mentioned, the 12V adapter option is a good one. I rewired the Rexing and wired a VIOFO A229 in another car the same way. You can find seams in the car that allow you to hide the wiring. I generally went through the ceiling liner, down the passenger-side A pillar, across the glove compartment, then through whatever panel is closest to the 12V adapter."

"You will be hard pressed to find any dashcam that can capture registration plates in the dark, let alone one for £30. My £170 (at time of purchase) Viofo A129 Duo which has the best sensor on the market at the time of purchase, struggles to pick up registration plates in the dark, even with a polarised lens attachment fitted. "i got a vantrue e1 pro a couple weeks ago for my 2018 rav4. install was super easy, which was a big plus since i didn’t want to deal with a complicated setup. the 4k resolution makes a noticeable difference, especially for reading plates and street signs. night vision is solid too, way better than my old 1080p cam. parking mode works well, but you do need to hardwire it if you want full motion detection when the car is off. i had a shop do it since i wasn’t sure about messing with the fuse box. so far, no complaints. if you’re looking for something compact but still has great video quality, it’s a solid option."
