Best praise vs top criticism for Acer Predator X27
“In my opinion it's as exciting right now as it has ever been in the last decade. I actually just thought about my monitor upgrades... 2012: BenQ XL2420T, this was a 24 inch 120 Hz TN monitor with Nvidia 3D vision support (stereoscopic 3D with shutter glasses). It was mostly a gimmick but there were a few games where it was legitimately great, for example Crysis 3. 2015: Acer XB270HU, didn't need 3D vision anymore and wanted to upgrade to 27 inch 1440p. This was the first 144 Hz IPS monitor with these specs. 2020: Got a refurbished Acer X27 for "cheap-ish", and this was my biggest monitor upgrade ever. Real HDR with mini-LED backlight, 120 Hz 4K screen with 160 ppi. 2022: The X27 did have one significant flaw and that was its audible fan which was kinda annoying, and the first 34 inch ultrawide OLED was released, so I sidegraded to the Dell AW3423DW. Then decided I'll stick with ultrawides for both work and games. 2023: Changed to another 34 inch 1440p ultrawide, from OLED to mini-LED, got the Lenovo Y34wz-30. My most boring upgrade to date, but it's better for work, and almost as good as the AW3423DW for games. 2026: LG just announced the first 39 inch 5K2K ultrawide OLED and this will be a gigantic upgrade for me, really looking forward to it 🤩 So this is just my pov of course, anyway I can't really complain. Well maybe that it took so long for 5K2K ultrawides to become more widely available, and in different sizes... Luxury problems, I guess.”
“If i might make a suggestion. Skip 4K and go straight to 5K. 5K @ 27" is the same res Apple studio displays use, meaning MacOS can do the same integer scaling and avoid the problem you're referring to (aliasing from supersampling) altogether. There are a couple of 5K models out there from other vendors (ASUS, BenQ, Samsung), but if you want to buy now / in the near future and don't care about mini-LED, I'd suggest the: Viewsonic 27" VP2788-5K From my research it's the only one that outputs at 75hz. Yeah i know you said you don't game, but higher refresh rates do affect productivity tasks. For example keeping text clear during scrolling. So while you may not require +180hz, anything over 60hz at the same price point is still a win. As for me personally i do still game somewhat / want to have the versatility that comes from higher framerates. So the one i'm looking for is: Acer Predator 31.5" XB323QX - TBR Q3 2025 5K mini-LED display @ 144hz, and a mediatek scalar with a mode that can half the res to 2K and bump the refresh to 288hz if needed. As stated it's 31.5", so it's not quite Apple's definition of "retina", however it's still 5K so there should be no supersampling issues on mac. The only practical difference between this and the Apple Studio would be viewing distance because the pixel density isn't as high as 27" 5K displays. I calculated it out some time ago, and from memory the difference for retina viewing distance between the two is something like ~3 inches 😑 If anyone splits hairs over that, slap them. Damn pixel peeper perverts. **IMPORTANT: If you do want to go 5K you'll want to pay extra attention and double check the cables and the ports on your existing devices.** 5K requires *extremely* high bandwidth even in SDR let alone HDR. Older hardware and lower quality cables can have problems handling that bandwidth.”
