Best praise vs top criticism for DIY Wool Batting Topper
“I was inches away from buying Avocado as well. I’m lucky to have a showroom nearby with all the models so I could test them out. I fell in love with the plush pillow top. It’s a good brand. I did extensive research and read tons of reviews on this subreddit. I even read everything on the underground mattress website which was referred by someone here. I may have been very happy with Avocado had I purchased it, and I may still be if I return the bed I actually bought which has not yet arrived, which is Naturepedic. Naturepedic also has a showroom, and I tested out all the beds. They were a little firmer overall, even the pillow top. I think it’s because they use Dunlap latex where Avocado uses Tallalay on top which is highest grade latex, though not organic if that matters to you, because Tallalay certification isn’t a thing. Both use NR (natural rubber), not synthetic, which was the most important consideration for me. No off gassing. Because I like a cloud like feel where I sink into the bed I preferred the feel of Avocado. Yet I still went with Naturepedic for three reasons. 1. You can change out layers for free to adjust firmness rather than sending the whole thing back. 2. This feature also makes it easier to rotate the mattress. Avocado recommends you rotate mattress head to toe every month to prevent sagging which is pretty much impossible for one person because latex is HEAVY. Naturepedic you just rotate the top layer by unzipping. 3. You can talk to the same person who sold you the bed at Naturepedic. At Avocado you can’t. I spent a good 2-3 hours in both places talking through preferences and testing. If I have issues or questions, I don’t want to explain everything again to a new person. As the Avocado rep told me, all calls are routed to a 1-800 number so you won’t get the same person except by dumb luck. A final point for me- not a needle mover but a nice touch is Naturepedic mattresses have individually wrapped encased coils which is good for motion isolation vs interconnected coils which move more as a unit. (This is the core layer. Latex is the top. I tried all latex but it was way too firm for me.) Both beds actually have individual encased coils but Naturepedic manufactures their coils in house from recycled steel and don’t use any glues. Mattress glues typically contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Naturepedic is very transparent about all materials and production processes(unlike major mattress brand manufacturers). The beds are made in the US in Ohio at a GOTS-certified factory. My new bed arrives in about a week. I also got the wool topper which will help make it softer. It was definitely a splurge but at least it was on sale for Black Friday. Apologies for the book here. I am just so grateful for all the people here who have taken the time to provide detailed information around their experience and learnings. I came back here so many times as I tested mattresses, and the info here ultimately helped me to ma”
“One thing to note op - memory foam does not work for heavier people. If you're below average weight they are great, but if you're heavy, it will eventually sink in the hips, cause spinal curvature at night and slowly turn you into someone with chronic lower back pain. Of course, the salesmen won't mention this due to the high markup commission return on memory foam due to its ease / speed to produce these types of mattresses. They are much cheaper to manufacture, make more profit and feed off the oil and gas industry. I just got a plank firm natural, it has 13.5g steel coils which means I will not sink in with my hips, keeping my alignment. That said I can still add a topper for some pressure point relief, like latex or wool. The mattress has no off gassing and is organic, something I value for spending 8 hours enveloped in it. They say cancer rates will be rising in th3 generations to come because of the rise of memory foams and cheap polyurethane foam in brands that have sold out health for profit. Don't buy major mattress brands. Engineered sleep or dlx or even brooklyn bedding are far better options and will last much longer. Op I don't want you to regret this purchase, give it a week then return it. I'd look into organic mattresses personally. Off gassing is known to disrupt sleep as well. Companies like Engineered sleep will work with you to make what you want. Plank firm natural with a plush topper is a good option ( birch plush latex wool topper or buy wool topper and latex topper separately.) If you live somewhere with a sleepare store, go check out brands there.”
