Best praise vs top criticism for Zinus Pressure Relief Hybrid
“I think people are usually more upset over the decrease in durability that has occurred over the years than at the salesmen. Mattresses have changed drastically over the years in the way they are manufactured.(You probably know all this of course but Im just laying out where I think people have issues) The idea used to be that we slept on an innerspring, usually a continuous coil system such as bonnell coils, with just a thin layer of polyurethane foam or fiber padding to prevent you from feeling the coils. Those mattresses could go on for what felt like forever, flipping them to utilize both sides, and you basically had until the innerspring system failed until you needed to replace. Now the concept of a mattress is different, rather than just getting pressure relief from softening the support, we also use layers of polyurethane foam above the coils for extra comfort. So with modern hybrids as the layers of polyurethane foam soften or compress in areas, the mattress quickly becomes unusable from the uneven support. On old innersprings this wasnt much of an issue as 1" of foam compressing isnt going to form huge divots or cause major issues. People also often dont consider just how much better modern mattresses are with edge support, motion isolation, pressure relief, ect. IMO the blame for shortened durability goes both ways. Its the consumers who are choosing hybrids because they are the most comfortable, they are voting with their wallets and pushing the industry in that direction. Of course they also mostly purchase based on comfort, and what is the most comfortable is often not the most durable. Anyone can go pick up a simple innerspring mattress and probably have no issues getting at least 10 years out of it right now, but they chose not to. On the flip side because that initial comfort is what sells mattresses, manufacturers can get away with using lower and lower density foams. The consumer has no way of knowing if their memory foam is 5lb density or 2.5lb, or if their polyurethane foam is 1.8lb HD foam, or 1.2lb foam which will more likely fail on them in a few years. As a consumer if we want to ask about the specs of the foam used in the mattresses being sold to us(Density, ILD), virtually all of the main S brands will not disclose that information to us. So we have no measurable metrics of quality to compare one mattress to another.”
“A topper is a band aid, and in this case probably a waste of money. On a memory foam mattress, it probably won’t help the back issues. That’s usually from a lack of support, and no topper can provide that much support if the mattress underneath is caving in under it. It’s worthwhile to invest in your sleep, even if you have to finance. My mattress was the only thing I ever financed and I don’t regret it at all. You can get something halfway decent that’s still affordable, especially with Black Friday coming up and many retailers already starting their Black Friday sale. I would go into a mattress store and talk it out with a salesperson and try a few mattresses out. Take as long as you need (if they give you shit for it, they’re not good at their job) and look for something with good support and pressure relief, I recommend something with coils instead of full memory foam. Ask about their return policy and make sure you understand it well, so if you do choose the wrong mattress you can swap it out.”
