Best praise vs top criticism for Western Mountaineering UltraLite
“I unsuccessfully tried quilts a few times over the years and they never worked for me - until I bought my Alsek 22 because I was unhappy with the packed size of my WM Ultralite. Boy I love the Alsek! I run a tad cold, too, and recently on the Colorado Trail, I was super happy to have the 22 and not the 30. You can always put arms or feet out if it’s too warm but if it gets cold, you have some reserves. Couldn’t be happier with my choice!”
“I think what you need is just a better bag. I wouldn't rate that Big Agnes as more than a 30 degree comfort bag (and that's being generous). Generally I would avoid brands like Big Agnes and Nemo for sleeping bags. Instead look at brands like Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends. Much higher quality, lighter, and way more packable. If you have 600 bucks to throw at this I'd just get the Western Mountaineering UltraLite which is a 20 degree bag but will be way warmer and more packable than your current bag. Alternatively take a look at the Feathered Friends Swallow (full bag) or Flicker (quilt but can be fully zipped). If you're open to quilts I'd consider a Katabatic 15 or 5 degree quilt. Katabatic makes great gear and their ratings are true comfort ratings. These will also be cheaper since their not full sleeping bags.”
