Best praise vs top criticism for Sawyer Squeeze
“Yes. Sawyer Squeeze / Platypus QuickDraw / Katadyn BeFree are all great options.”
“Filters like the Sawyer Squeeze are cheap, fast, lightweight, and easy to use. You come to a creek, refill 2 liters in 5 minutes. On the other hand, boiling means stopping, setting up your stove, boiling half a liter in 5-10 minutes, letting the water sit for 30 minutes to cool, pour it into your water bottle, and repeat 3 more times to get 2 liters. What you save in weight and expense of a cheap, light filter, you more than make up for in the heavy, expensive fuel you have to carry. Think you can skip the stove fuel with a campfire, that’s a ton of time and effort gathering wood and maintaining it. It will still take hours to fill your bottles. Look, if you want a more Bushcraft style weekend, camping next to a creek, keeping a fire going the whole time with a kettle hanging over it, go for it. I’ve done that, it’s a grand time. But it’s not ultralight trekking. Get a filter.”
