Best praise vs top criticism for Tarptent Stratospire 2
“I get that tarptent isn’t always thought of as the most ultralight tent company, but their engineering is certainly among, if not the best, amongst ultralight tent makers. I’ve used a stratospire 2 for years now, and it can take anything I can throw at it. As I’ve lowered my pack weight, I mostly bring the stratospire along for canoeing trips where I appreciate the great design, wind/rain shedding, and increased headroom for two people. And the fact that they’re made mostly of 30d should help them outlast many ultralight tents. Tarptent is definitely worth looking at, imo.”
“The hexamid and hexamid twin were I think they're first DCF tents. I had one of the twin models in 2012. It has a shorter peak at the back supported by a 2nd trekking pole to give the 2nd occupant in the back some room. I eventually got rid of it and we moved to a Tarptent Stratospire 2. Things I didn't like: To lower the "beak" and clip it required you to lean waaay out on elbows to clip or unclip it. Rolling up the beak so that you could exit the tent without having to "army crawl" was also slow and inconvenient compared to a standard vestibule with a zipper. Having one door for two occupants also sucked. I made a clip in bathtub floor, but if everything wasn't set up perfectly rain would drip off the dcf and through the mesh onto a corner of the floor.”
