Best praise vs top criticism for Orea V3
“I understand your motivation, and also understand that you are trying to choose from what Eight Ounce currently has on their offer. But, both choices are not that great for a filter brew, and I would choose neither. Why: First of all, the SSP Red Speed coating is recommended for espresso. For a filter brew, the SSP Silver Knight coating is recommended. That is the coating on the Lab Sweet V3 burr, also known as Cast V3 (CV3). But, the difference between CV2 and CV3 is, that CV2 is good for both filter brew and espresso, while CV3 is focused specifically on espresso, by adding more fines, which is generally not desirable for the filter brew. Also, the Multi-Purpose V2 (MPv2) burrs, here in RedSpeed version, were identified as sometimes not that great for filter brew, and for that purpose, it seems that the current consensus is that the previous version (UMV1) is better. See [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lJ8u6QkuYg) for details. So, it would make sense to consider the Silver Knight coated CV2 or UMV1 for the filter brew. But, another thing is that the Fellow Ode Gen2 is pretty basic flat burr grinder, and the way it is built mechanically (precision, tolerances) means that the output from CV2 burrs on the Ode2 will be probably pretty close to the stock Ode2 burrs anyways, so there is no point really to spend a lot of extra money on that. Also, CV2/CV3 burrs require seasoning with a few kilograms of coffee (up to 7 kg) to perform at best. So, the only real upgrade to consider would be SSP Silver Knight UMV1 burrs, if more clarity is what you are after. They should work better than the SSP Red Speed MPV2 burrs, which are also provided by Fellow directly. But, you should also understand, that with both MPV2 and UMV1 burrs, the dialing in process will be more difficult, than with the stock Ode2 burrs, which are more forgiving. You will have to be more precise to set the grind level for each beans properly, and each bag of coffee may require a slightly different grind settings, which you will have to identify. Since you are using an automatic brewer, and not the manual pour-over methods (which can be adjusted for the grind level as needed), I would suggest that the stock Ode2 burrs might be a better choice for you.”
“They also don’t take criticism well. Somebody very mildly expressed surprise with the Z1 cost and they responded with a really pretentious and shitty “you just don’t get it and sorry we actually pay our people”. I reached out to them once upon a time for info on what was safe to clean my recycled frost v3 with bc it was staining bad and they never responded. I’ve liked my v3, it’s a good brewer. But they’re definitely taking the snobby overpriced route. I’m not interested in spending almost $100 on a tiny plastic brewer that isn’t particularly innovative or remarkable just because they don’t know how to manufacture things.”
