Best praise vs top criticism for MSR WhisperLite Universal
“The pump stoves aren't built for alcohol: Examples would be MSR whisperlite, primus omnifuel etc. I'm not sure what happens if you do or why it wouldn't work other than it not being good for the seals. Most alcohol stoves are about the diameter of a soda can, you can get them fairly cheaply or make your own from a soda can. There isn't much in the way of flame control, most are on or off (some have some control). They can be very lightweight and very quiet. Some places do not allow alcohol stoves because they require something that can be turned off immediately and when they're knocked over they can start a fire very easily both because the liquid spills and the flame is hard to see.”
“My whisperlite been cooking meals and boiling water since 2005. I have a 3 burner Coleman that my grandpa used camping. Both are quality gear that will last. I've always had a "buy once, cry once" attitude towards towards gear. Sure it can be more expensive upfront but divide the cost over the life of the product times the headache of replacing cheaper broken gear. At least in my head it makes sense to take the wallet hit up front. For this, I guess it comes down to the question "Do you ever see yourself backpacking or wanting that ability anywhere in the near future?" as both would be more than adequate for your current situation.”
