Best praise vs top criticism for LG G4
“I’m finally reaching a point where I’m saying enough, I’m content, I’m putting a wrap on 2024’s upgrades, changes, adjustments and tinkering. The most recent upgrade you ask? Well, that would be moving from (2) SVS SB-4000’s to (2) SVS SB-17 Ultra’s. Why you ask? Why not I reply? The 4000’s were capable: they sounded smooth, they were good, but the SB-17’s just looked menacing on the website, and promised close to ultrasonic frequencies, so 2 weeks later and a 350-pound pallet delivery later, here we are. I haven’t had a lot of time to sit down and listen, to truly soak in their capabilities, but what I have so far has sent some chills up my skin. I’ve played around in REW for a bit, getting them aligned and curved to be flat down to around 10Hz, and after some test scenes from Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick and Apollo 13 launch, I’m sure my neighbors down the road think we’re at war and I’m going to have to reinforce some shelves. They blend nicely into the system, both aesthetically and tonally, only 2” larger in all dimensions from the 4000’s, and who doesn’t love a big sub. Other additions for 2024 include: Upgrading from the KEF Q150 to matching Paradigm Studio 20 v3 for Surround Right/Left. Bigger, heavier, louder and timber matching make me happy. ATS Acoustic panels front and rear of the room which has significantly increased clarity and reduced reverberation, well worth the money. Upgrading to (4) Dayton Audio BST-300EX’s. Fun, unassuming, and when dialed in properly really enhances the movie experience without feeling gimmicky. Before anyone comments on the “Tilt of Guilt/Shame” or “TV too high”, I’m aware. I make the sacrifice of moving my head up just slightly to have my center channel in an ideal listening position. At this point, not sure what the next logical upgrade steps would be, considering an amplifier, maybe Tonewinner / Outlaw Audio, but since I’m listening far from reference levels, not sure how effective of an upgrade this would end up being. Always eyeing the 83” LG G4, but spending ~$4,500 for another 6” seems a bit silly. Anyway, until 2025’s upgrade bug strikes, I say enough 2024, you’ve put a dent in my wallet but damn if you didn’t bring a smile to my face every time I sit and watch. “100 percent the bigger set … if it was between a smaller OLED and some terrible other tech I’d totally agree get the smaller TV but between a G4 and a C4? Get the bigger TV as picture quality difference negligible. Enjoy the new TV!”
