Best praise vs top criticism for Durston Kakwa 40
“I’ll give a shot: * You can drop 10oz with a 2lb pack like the Gossamer Gear Mariposa or Durston Kakwa 55. I have the Kakwa for my larger loads and it rides very comfortably. Up to 30lbs is non-issue. * nyloflume liner costs <$5 and saves you 1.5oz. * I’ve only read bad things about the Klymit static V. I’d replace with a Thermarest NXT NeoAir and save 5oz. * Nitecore NU20 with a shockcord mod is just over 1oz saving 2oz over your Petzl and then no need for extra AAA batteries. 3.3oz saved. * I think you could go with a 10000maH battery lite the Nitecore NB10000 and save 7oz. With my iPhone 14 and Apple Watch in low battery + airplane modes, I easily get a week out of it. The Anker Nano 20W charges the fastest that battery can go. .5 oz saved with that. So 7.5oz total. You could also swap some of your cables for the USB-C to whatever adapters and save maybe another ounce. * Replace your fleece leggings with alpha leggings. I use a senchi pair to sleep in. They’re great. Save about 9oz. If you need a wind block. Enlightened Equipment wind pants weight another 1.5oz. Also have and like a lot. With both still save 7.5oz. * Your tent is fine. You could drop down to Lunar Solo and save about 8oz. If you have money to spend, you could drop to any of the ~1lb DCF tents (Zpacks SoloPlex, Durston X-mid pro, etc). That saves 6-16oz. Also where are your stakes? Are you carrying trekking poles? * BRS 3000T stoves saves 1.5 oz. Just use your food bag to block the wind. * Opinel No.2 or No. 3 knife weight .2 oz saving you 1oz or so. But really all you need is a pair of Mini scissors from Litesmith. * Leave pot scraper (.4oz) Use your spoon to clean. Leave a lighter (.35oz). A mini bic has never failed me and just its flint is enough to light a stove. That’s what I got for now. Minumum saved is 44.05oz (2.7lb). Max is 55.55oz (3.47lb). Going through and removing tiny things (do I need this?) will surely save you some more. Good luck!”
“With the caveat that I am hard on my gear and do a lot of off-trail travel: I have a Mariposa and a Durston Kakwa. The Mariposa did not hold up to any real use (seriously, like 2 trips) and did not carry weight very well - it was really horrible on my back and no amount of fiddling with adjustments helped. Obviously fit is going to be a very individual thing. The Kakwa handles weight much better and fits me well. It's already survived more than the Mariposa and looks like new.”
