Best praise vs top criticism for Sierra Designs Convert 2
“Energy is energy. And it has to “go somewhere” (sort of). If you are trapping it, it doesn’t matter what you are wearing, it will stay in there. Unless you are somehow converting it to light or sound or solid matter somehow. Assuming you effectively trap it in there and don’t convert it to something else, the temp will rise. Air is a crummy heat conductor, so having layers that hold air static around you will keep you insulated and warm. Fill those layers with water (a much better heat conductor) and you won’t stay warm anymore. I don’t doubt this is “debated.” But it’s like, 7th grade level physics, so you can take that debate with a grain of salt. My wife and mother in law are teachers and they think you should leave the oven open in winter when you are done cooking, to help heat the house. The idea being that leaving it closed loses that heat.. I can’t even… Anyway.. tldr, if your clothes and bedding are dry, they will do their job and keep you warm. There is no “my inner layer prevented my outer layer from warming up so I got cold.” That would be a violation of a VERY fundamental law of physics.”
“Get the newish dometic mattresses. Killer R-value and had even tested it in -5 in Alaska and was warm through the night and did some shoulder season camping in Moab and the eastern sierras and never had a warmth issue. It made me junk out my exped to REI as it performs better and the comfort level is higher than exped IMO. I am more of a side sleeper and found the support superior than exped. Price point as well is better. I’m a full dometic convert now 😂”
