tldr; Maine-made mocs that are resoleable and comfortable. Grad school favorite. Competes with Oak Street and Alden.

Best praise vs top criticism for Rancourt & Co. Beefroll Penny Loafer
““No sandals” is way too broad, like yeah Chacos and Tevas are utility-first but Birkenstocks or something like [these](https://www.permanentstyle.com/2025/04/the-rondini-british-sandal-a-review-from-the-road.html) can totally work and look put together. Honestly, I’d out flip-flops way below even Chacos style-wise. Might as well wear Crocs. I’ll second loafers (just got some Rancourts I’m excited to wear this summer) and a good, simple canvas sneaker is still good.”
“What, exactly, do you think makes the Gucci loafers high quality? They use middlining thin leather for the upper. You can argue that they use the thinner leather for comfort, which is fine, but doesn't change that it's probably EUR 30 worth of leather. The outsole is similarly middling quality and thin. Again, you could argue comfort, but that's another 25 to 30 with the heel. The shoes are Blake stitched. This takes just a few seconds and is done with a machine. Yes, the 1953 does have a hand stitched plug, but so does a pair of 45 dollar sperrys. They are made in Italy, but almost certainly in a sweatshop where extremely underpaid workers toil in horrible conditions. Gucci and others were so bad even the Italian government stepped in and said people shouldn't buy their products. There is probably another 30 EUR in things like the bit and insole. All in all, the material cost, manufacturing cost, and packaging is going to be cheaper than someone like Rancourt. The QC is better, for sure, but not enough to justify 3x the cost. It you want to flex on people with your overpriced loafers that's totally fine. But dont pretend they are any different than a pair or Jordan 1s.”
