“Here are my tips as a father of a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old. They have served me well over the super-messy years: 1. Always have Oxy-Clean spray on hand. Buy in bulk to save money. It’s great for getting stains out, especially if you spray immediately after the spill or sticky hands or whatever. 2. Pick your battles. Don’t wear expensive ecru selvedge jeans to a kid’s birthday party at the zoo. If you must wear ecru selvedge jeans to the office, plan on changing into a pair of beater vintage 501s when you return home. Wear a cheap relaxing uniform fit around the home, like a UU tee and shorts, so it doesn’t matter if your kid grabs your shirt with a hand full of spaghetti sauce during dinner. 3. Prioritize darker colors when you want to put together a nice fit for daytime outings. Reserve lighter colors for kid-free times, like a date night. 4. Don’t leave anything nice laying around the home. Hang up your four-figure suede jacket in a closet the kids don’t have access to when you get home. If you just drop it on the side of the chair, you’re kind of asking for a greasy ice cream stain that costs $50 for the dry cleaner to remove. 5. Teach your kids the importance of respecting nice clothes. Buy them a nice outfit (and by nice, it can be something from PRL rather than Target), and help them go through the routine of taking it off when they get home, and folding or hanging it up. Learning to respect their own nice clothes will help them to respect yours, because they will draw the connection between their special pieces, and yours.”
