Best praise vs top criticism for Nicks Boots Ridgeline
“What was an already spectacular day hike was hugely improved by the appearance of 4 very naughty Kea at the ridgeline of Bealey Spur Track. Kea are the world's only alpine parrot and they are notoriously daft and inquisitive. They were very happy to see us. Definitely recommend if you find yourself on the South Island. Hike: Bealey Spur Track (including Bealey Hut and Point). 17.5km x 1,055m elevation x 4.5 hours All photos copyright JR\_Tompkins and not for re-use.”
“Whatever you decide, make sure you're hydrating even if you're just in the car at high elevation. Frequent urination while your body adjusts to altitude is not uncommon, especially if driving (gaining elevation quickly). The more time you can spend at high elevation leading up to the hike the better (for the most part). There's some studies out of Stanford on acetazolamide (diamox), ibuprofen, and a couple other drugs and their effect on perceived altitude sickness, you can draw your own conclusions (not a doctor, etc etc). You may already know this but the earlier you start the better (midnight to 3a is not unusual). Nice and cool while it's dark, get some shade on the final approach (if standard route, ridgeline is to the east), and avoid afternoon thunderstorms.”
