Best praise vs top criticism for Lowa Zephyr GTX Mid
“A boot needs a semi-rigid or rigid upper with a shaft height of 6" or more to actually provide any added support over a trail runner. Otherwise, all the support is coming from the midsole. You would need a semi-rigid or rigid 6" or taller upper and a semi-rigid or rigid midsole to meet your needs. Most of these boots are going to involve some weight - Salomon Quest 4 GTX, Asolo Fugitive GTX, Lowa Zephyr GTX, etc., etc. Those are some of the lighter options, but they're still not going to be ultralight. I need a lot of support, so I alternate between the Asolo TPS 520 GV Evo, Asolo Fugitive GTX, and Salomon Quest 4 GTX because they fit me the best. What you'll need to do is find the boot that fits your foot shape well *and* meets the criteria for support. For wider feet, I'd recommend Lowa, Meindl, and Hanwag (wide). Salomon's Forces line and Quest 4 GTX may also work as they tend to run a little wider than other models within the brand. With high arches, I recommend that you get some insoles to provide a bit more structure and support as well. Superfeet Green and Hike Support, Tread Labs Pace, and SOLE are the ones I like. Bear in mind that another option would be to wear a brace with trail runners with a firm midsole. That could potentially work and give you a lighter option.”
“For $100, you're going to have to look to clearance and used sales for quality boots. Some that I've seen on sale for that price point: Asolo Fugitive; Lowa Renegade; Lowa Zephyr; Ōboz; Scarpa. If a boot costs $100 new, it's not worth your money. It will not last. It will not offer much support. It will not be comfortable. Depending upon the kind of hikes you're doing and where you're hiking, trail runners might be another option. They'll offer no support, but that's not necessary for most people for every hike. That said, there are some outliers, like myself, who do need boots for regular use due to things like injuries and connective tissue disorders (I have Ehler-Danlos Syndrome). If you're one of us, you'll need to get good boots from the clearance and used sections, or you'll need to save up for a new pair of good boots. I hope this has been helpful.”
