Best praise vs top criticism for Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 4
“We are a family of 5. The kids are now 17, 15 and 13. We use a Hyperlite Ultamid 4 with full inner. We have been using this for 6 years. The oldest in the last few years usually sleeps in a bivy but if its wet or we are late into camp he frequently just bunks in with all of us. When there is 5 we offset the centre pole. I have never had any major issue finding room to pitch. For us its fantastic. It sets up quickly and can be used for wet lunchstops without the inner. I can stand up to dress, it has heaps of room when we are stuck in bad weather for all 5 to sit and play cards. The inner is smaller so there is room around the edges outside the mesh for packs and shoes. Its not perfect but works. No vestibule of course but I dont find this an issue. To cook we just open the door a little and pull the floor back if needed and we have a space. We also carry a Zpack dcf tarp which we use as a porch. It easily clips to the top of the ultamid and works well if needed. The oldest sleeps here if in his bivy. I cant really fault the ultamid for families. My vote would be go this way but im sure the Hogback would be great too. I think you would adapt to either.”
