Best praise vs top criticism for Denon Home Sound Bar 550
“I would look at the Denon Home 5.1 setup of Denon 550 Soundbar, Denon Home subwoofer, and a pair of Denon 150s as surrounds. Very powerful, room filing, and fantastic sound for both films and music. It uses HRTF (Head Relater Transfer Functuon) to simulate Dolby Atmos Height sounds. Everyone uses this psycho-acoustic technique in place of upward firing speakers in a soundbar. Some do it better than others but Denon is one of the industry leaders. However with catherdral ceilings, you won’t really experience true Atmos height sounds without in-ceiling speakers. HRTF or upward firing drivers can’t overcome angled ceilings. Regardless, it will still be a very satisfying audio experience in my opinion as a user muself.”
“I also have a dedicated 5.1 setup in my great room with Marantz receiver, SVS sub, KEF center snd fronts, and in ceiling rear surrounds and it sounds amazing. I was doing my basement from scratch and thought I could get away with a decent soundbar and since I already was invested in the Denon/Heos ecosystem I decided on the 550 soundbar. I don't love it and it is probably only a little better than the TV speakers. I don't really use the Heos function in the soundbar and would be open to any other brand that allows me to add a sub and rear surrounds.”
