Best praise vs top criticism for Samsung HW-Q990D
“Soundbar set ups are definitely a compromise if audio quality is your #1 priority but they sometimes get frowned upon more than they should be. Maybe the visual appeal matters to you, the space saving form factor, a disapproving partner on the aesthetics of standard HT set-up, or you just like the set up convenience of a soundbar in a box set up. It is a hobby for many of us on this forum and our set up can be ever evolving for many of us. If you have the patience, curiosity, and time to go from decent/good sound to amazing sound then definitely go for it! I am sure if you don’t go down the audiophile/home theatre rabbit hole you would be entirely satisfied with the q990d. Thats just my opinion. I have a sonos beam gen2, era 300s, minisub wife-approved set up that works well in my bedroom and a $5k+ set up in my living room and they both serve their role well.”
“First rule of HT - use either a coaxial center like KEF or ELAC UC52, or a throw three-way like SVS prime or Ultra center or Monitor Audio c250 7g. Avoid 2-way MTM design centers like the plague. For gear at your budget I’d use ELAC DB63 for front and rear channels, ELAC UC52 center, RSL Speedwoofer, and Sony STRDH590 AVR. It’s more than your budget, but as inexpensive as I would recommend even for a modest system. If you must stick to $1500 get the Samsung HW-Q990D soundbar package, but I doubt you will be as satisfied with it compared to the system I recommended.”
