Best praise vs top criticism for Denon AVR-X4800H
“I switched from a cheap Sony to a Denon AVC-X4800H. The support of DTS-HD was the first major improvement. The biggest however, albeit requiring a second, large investment, was the integrated Dirac room correction. I started out with Dirac Room Correction and Bass Control, it was night and day. I later bought the Dirac Art license, which fortunately was supported by my receiver (only a handful from Denon and Marantz are), which - again - was night and day from before. I'm incredibly happy now and the upgrade was absolutely worth it, though it did cost me around 2k in total.”
“Im a custom integrator in Kansas City and can weigh in on some things. This is not me saying this integrator is bad. They're probably great, but I try and put the customer first in my jobs, even if it means me not making as much. You're certainly not being ripped off overall, but you're also not getting a great deal. Its market price which is where I would start too. I would do an Epson over that Sony. The Sony 5000 does not have a motorized lens, no 4K120 (yes I know the Epson is 2k e-shift, but you cant tell from the seating position), worse ANSI contrast, similar native contrast, and no laser dimming. It's not worth it. None of the Sony's are when compared to Epson and JVC. Go Epson at your price point and don't look back. I would ask for another speaker manufacturer other than Bowers. They are fine, but if you listen loud, they will run out of gas very quickly and can be uncomfortable to listen to at normal volumes to some due to how they are voiced. Theyre not bad, but there are better speakers for the money on the market. I personally prefer very high efficiency speakers that do well at both music and movies at high volumes. Thats a hard thing to ask for from a speaker, and there are few manufacturers that due it well. I have no idea who makes that projector screen. My go to are Stewart and Seymour. Are they more expensive than Silver Ticket or something similar? For sure. However, the Silver Ticket I had, and others I know others have had, would rattle with room pressurization and the volume cranked so I've steered clear of them. Plus, I view Stewart and Seymour's as end game screens. If you get a StudioTek 100 or 130, or a Seymour Glacier White and you have yourself a reference level screen used by industry professionals. There is no going up from there unless you need to change the material due to room changes. The Denon 6800h is fine. However, you gain nothing from the extra power output from the amps. remember, it takes a doubling of power to gain 3dB. The 6800h has just a few more watts over the 4800h so there will be no volume difference. Therefore, the only thing you really gain is some features, if any, plus the extra outputs for speakers. What I would recommend you think about is to do the 4800h and then a dedicated amp to power the LCR. This will give you more power for your main speakers. Id recommend looking at Buckeye amps for that. Very clean end game power for a price that should be at or just under what you are paying for just the 6800h. URC remotes suck in my opinion. Granted almost all universal remotes suck. If you're at all tech savvy, look at check out this remote that operates on your phone. It's done by a friend of mine. Its free and works well, but remember, if you do something like this, you are your own tech support.
