Best praise vs top criticism for Nvidia Shield TV Pro
“In my opinion there are two options, Apple TV 4K and NVIDIA Shield PRO. Here’s a cut and paste from another post of the differences and the reason I use both (Atmos from BD/4k rips is a HUGE one): The Shield supports Dolby Atmos from bluray rips. This seems to be the main reason people choose it over the AppleTV. The AppleTV only supports Atmos for streaming services (or WEB-DL files). It will max out with lossless PCM 7.1 for bluray rips. The AppleTV hardware is faster and more reliable. Although both are fast and snappy devices. The AppleTV’s processor is just that much faster than anything else. The Shield, being Android, allows for more customization and tinkering. Sideloading apps, custom Home Screen launchers, etc. With the AppleTV you’re kinda stuck with what Apple allow. But the tvOS home screen is just a nice grid of apps with no ads. The Shield, being Google, is constantly trying to sell you shit on the home screen and you need that tinkering to disable it. The Shield is 5 years old now and Nvidia is showing no signs of caring about it. A latest model AppleTV is likely to get 7+ years of actually useful OS updates and support from Apple. Shield doesn’t support HDR10+, the AppleTV does. But only relevant if your TV and content supports that format.”
“my samsung qn95b hates using the second setup. It will constantly revert to internal speakers and it shows the stupid on screen volume change notification. If i use the first option it works perfectly and doesn’t show the ui. I do have a pc hooked up directly to the tv and the audio still works but if i have the shield pro or anything else on the one connect box it doesn’t work. I think it will depend on the tv and the firmware, but im never buying a samsung again i can tell you that.”
