Best praise vs top criticism for Altra Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX
“I'm all-in on Altra, and the fever is spreading to my friends now. I have not tried Hoka, but I love my Altras too much to bother with another brand for the foreseeable future. For a beginner, I think cushion is a good thing. It helps protect against injury to the foot and ankles and makes the overall experience better. But minimalist pros have a point about stability and strength, and some of the strongest hikers I know regularly hike barefoot to maintain their foot strength and stability. That said, I'd recommend the Altra Olympus or Timp instead of Hokas, but that's just my bias toward Altra in general. I trail run in the Altra Olympus, and while I do intend to switch to the Lone Peak 9 for my next pair, it's not because the Olympus is uncomfortable. It's a wonderful shoe, I just want to move down in cushion.”
“I’m on my 3rd or 4th pair of altra olympus. I hit them at REI and if they fall apart i return them for replacements in the first year. I’ve had the stitched decorative pieces start coming loose within the first 10 miles. Had some of the tread come off my latest within the first month or two. I basically assume I’ll have to replace them every year. And I’ll never buy anything else. I can wear a new pair out of the box on a 20+ mile backpacking trip and not get blisters. Hell, I’ve never gotten a blister from them. The comfort is worth the fact they aren’t super sturdy. Before this I wore Keens. I’d get blisters regularly. The shoes lasted years but the comfort wasn’t there.”
