“So, I think each reviewer has their own strengths and weaknesses. Angry Snowboarder, while a (supposedly) competent rider and someone who is knowledgeable about gear, he doesn’t go into nearly as much detail about the boards as reviewers like the good ride and snowboard profiles. Avran tends to focus and put a lot of great detail into a board’s chatter, pop, buttering/jibs, and carving and provides some basic board specs. He has great opinions on all of those, but lacks a lot of other important characteristics that are important to how a snowboard rides. For example, if I want opinions on edge hold, powder float, jump/sidehit performance, performance at speed, switch riding, more advanced specs, base glide, etc… I find that the Good Ride and Snowboard Profiles tend to give more info on those sorts of things. Also, you never see him ride, which is a bit odd considering the amount of shade he throws at other reviewers for not being strong riders. Also worth mentioning, his binding and boot reviews tend to be very limited and lacking (more so with boots than bindings). Still love him, but I think all of these things are worth mentioning. Good ride is very hit or miss, but you can’t deny that James has tested a very wide number and variety of boards and bindings. It’s pretty well known that he is not a great rider (“drives off the back foot”), so I just tend to weight his opinions. I’ll put more emphasis on his opinions of dampness, press/butter-ability, pop, and powder over his opinions of park, carving, and riding at speed. I also tend to check out his binding reviews a fair bit since he tends to be pretty okay with those. I am a pretty big fan of Snowboard Profiles (up there with angry imo). Nate doesn’t seem like a pro by any means, but he is also a strong intermediate rider (as far as I can tell anyways, there’s also really not much footage of his riding out there). He has also ridden and reviewed a large amount of equipment INCLUDING boots and bindings (which is hugely beneficial) and I find that his opinions are generally very in line with Avran’s/AngrySnowboarder’s when I compare them, which adds to my trust factor of him. Boards of the World is solid too, but he just doesn’t seem to have as many total reviews as the other reviewers I have mentioned. The reviews I have read from him are generally pretty on point though. As far as BoardArchive, SnowboardProCamp, and Curated, I generally don’t follow them whatsoever. As you mentioned, they all fall under the “here is everything great about this board” category and rarely (if at all) point out their weaknesses or flaws. It’s probably just to keep their sponsors happy and ensure that the brands keep giving them boards (much like the auto review industry or any industry reviewers tbh), but it doesn’t make for great reviews. If anything, I will watch them to just see if they confirm what Angry/Profile have said about a deck. And Buckhouse…yeah, no.”
“Salomon Assassin - the base is nicer ( Sintered vs Extruded ) than the Yes Basic and Ride Manic for longer term. Otherwise pretty similar specs, can't go wrong. Yes Basic or Ride Manic will probably ride pretty similar to each other, solid boards all around. Would avoid any all-Rocker boards for your area, no point to it really.”
