Something small form factor and easy to carry will make it into his pocket more often than a pliers based multi-tool. If you go for the Leatherman, get him something like a Bolster, Rev, or Micra. 14 year olds are still kids, give him something basic now for a beater/learner. Then down the road get him something nicer when he's more capable and can appreciate the extra features a more expensive tool might bring.”
