“#Grant Stone Plain Toe ~~Crimson~~ Brown Chromexcel _____ **The most amazing pair of wooden clogs I own.** Saying this a bit tongue in cheek. They are incredibly well constructed, clicked, and finished shoes. My gripe is with the heavy leather midsole. I wish these *did not* have a leather midsole and was a simple cork filling or leatherboard. Will elaborate below. **SIZING** * **Size:** 8EEE * **Last:** Leo I have really wide feet and these are a generous width and last. Fit is decent. Nothing close to the comfort like my Nicks or White's but hey if I can get a GYW shoe properly on my EEEEE feet I am happy. **Leather and Finishing** * **Leather:** Horween Brown Chromexcel. I am intentionally being pedantic. I know these are advertised as "Crimson" and Grant Stone has Horween apply a unique, proprietary dye or shade to distinguish the color but as far as I can tell, these are Brown Chromexcel. I've handled Wolverine 1000 mile boots in an identical shade. Plus, there is going to be enough color variation in leather batches that such a minute change is going to vary over the years. * **Finishing:** Fantastic The QC and attention to detail is impeccable. I was amazed at the clicking on these and furthermore that they are a **whole cut** derby. All I can say is wow. These are solid shoes. _____ **Comfort and Impressions after 1 Year** This is where the discussion will get polarizing. I do not like the leather midsole. Even after a year, these feel like wooden clogs compared to my Alden dress shoes and my Grant Stone Loafer (which is without the midsole). A thick, hardy leather midsole is fantastic in work boots and footwear that is going to get abuse and miles put on daily. In such circumstances you want the support, and the midsole will break in beautifully. **But here is the flip side:** if you are only wearing your footwear to the office and maybe walking a couple blocks to a restaurant or bar, not only will you not get the benefits of a leather midsole, but also the shoe will not break in properly. A leather midsole requires wear and strain to break in. Walking from your car to the office doesn't cut it. Even after a year, these are not broken in to my liking. I wish these were just a leather outsole with a leatherboard "midsole" or a cork footbed. My Aldens, by contrast, even though they have the * horrible * leatherboard, those Aldens are slippers. Yeah I can't take them trail hiking but they are better than calfskin slippers. Some people will probably have different perspectives but that's my take after a year in these. Gorgeous shoes, will last 20 years. . . maybe in another 2 years they will be slipper-like comfortable as my Aldens are.”
“There's a hierarchy. Let's ignore formal shoes. No patent, no opera pumps, no velvet slippers. What's left at the top of the formality hierarchy is an oxford/balmoral, then a step below is a blucher/derby. Closed vs open lacing. Then inside each type, you are looking at three things primarily: color, material, and detailing. Black is more formal than dark browns and burgundy, which are more formal than tan etc. Calf is more formal than shell and cxl and flesh. Cap toe and plain toe is more formal than perf toe, which is more formal than medallion toe and wingtip brogues. There are other options that are harder to place. Dark navy? Pebbled calf? Austerity wingtip? Let's not go there. The thing is though that there is overlap. A black plain toe blucher in calf is more formal, realistically, than a shortwing brogue oxford in tan shell. So it's allllll a long spectrum that isn't exactly linear and has curves and overlaps. Anyways, tan oxfords are in that weird zone where oxfords are correct for a suit, but tan brogue oxfords would go with rather few suits. Some will say they must be worn with a suit. I say meh, they will better match separate odd trousers and jacket. Wear them with summery clothes, think light colors, linens and cottons and blends, over charcoals and navies.”
