Best praise vs top criticism for Timemore Chestnut C3
“Honestly, the only one out of these I’d consider getting if I were you is the Kingrinder (though I don’t know much about Zerohero). The commandante and 1zpresso models are pretty endgame, and if you’re just getting into pourover, there are much cheaper grinders that will do you wonders if you’ve never ground your own coffee before. Coffee is all about small incremental improvements, which can definitely lead people down the money hole. I’d hate for you to start getting into the hobby, buy the most expensive grinder you can just because people are saying it’s the best one, and find out a few months from now that you don’t enjoy the process of improving your coffee making as much as you’d thought. I personally started my coffee journey about 3 years ago, and I’ve been using my Timemore Chestnut C2 since then. Is it the best or most consistent grinder? No, but it does the job and has allowed me to experiment a lot with different coffees and grind sizes, and I’ve learned a ton. I’m glad I didn’t go with the Commandante I was looking at right away, because honestly my knowledge of coffee and brewing skill wouldn’t have been at a point where it was worth investing that much into a grinder. That being said, handgrinders (for me) are absolutely the way to go if you’re in it for the tactile experience of coffee brewing. I’d highly recommend you go with either the Kingrinder you’re looking at (haven’t used it myself but is consistently mentioned as a good intro grinder) or one of the Timemore C2 or C3 models. In my experience, getting a grinder of that caliber will keep you happy for a few years, and then if you’re still looking to up your game, you can get a better grinder and keep your first grinder as a backup for traveling! With all that though, obviously noone on Reddit can tell you how to spend your money haha, so if you want the fancy Commandante or 1Zpresso, knock yourself out, and I hope you enjoy whatever grinder you end up purchasing. I just always want to caution people against feeling the need to get all the best coffee equipment immediately, because often even cheaper burr grinders that are made by companies that have intentionality in the equipment they make will already up the quality of your coffee so much more than you realize. As a side note, I’d say the same for your switch. Why not just get a $10 plastic v60, experiment a ton with different brew methods for a while, and then if you’re still wanting more, go get that switch? But again, if you have the budget for it, and you want the fancy stuff, more power to you! I hope you enjoy your pour over journey!”
“I have a Timemore C2 with C3 ESP 30 position dial plate. In an attempt to avoid buying a new grinder I have purchased the 38mm heptagonal burr off AliExpress. Has anyone else used this?”
