Best praise vs top criticism for Specialized Diverge E5
“That's not $1300 new, that's a full carbon Specialized Diverge from 2019. Previous comment has no idea what they're talking about, sorry. It retailed for $3500 in 2019. I had the same bike, but the alloy E5 comp with shimano 105, not the carbon version like this bike, and I bought that for $900 USD, which was a good deal. This is easily $1000+ even in that condition. The gash by the bottom bracket and seat-tube junction is not worrisome at all, at least from what I can tell. I've worked on bikes for over a decade, mainly carbon ones, but you can always show a bike shop those photos to ask for peace of mind. I say this because they've purposely sanded off the paint around it to see if the carbon underneath it is damaged or not, and from the photos, it's not from what I can see. You might want to add some clear nail polish paint on it just to protect the carbon though if you do buy it. The fact that this person did this shows that there is some honesty here...not many people would sand down their own bike to see if the carbon is damaged underneath... The sanded off paint on the bottom bracket was probably caused by a chain drop, and they sanded the paint off the cosmetically damaged area to see if the carbon is okay. The weave looks perfectly fine and there doesn't seem to be any delamination. You would see it right away pretty easily...fibres splintering off and cracked. Those DT Swiss wheels also seem like an upgrade, they usually came with cheaper Specialized' in house brand Axis wheels. The seatpost has also been upgraded to a carbon FSA seatpost. Btw, not sure what the other comment is talking about at all, but the chainrings look fine to me. They are still ROUNDED at the point, which is what you want. Some of those chainrings are square tapered and lower, that's by design; it's so the chain can seat better on the chainrings and also aids in shifting performance. Those chainrings are not worn, worn chainrings will be POINTY and SHARP and have a shark-fin curve to it going in the direction of the chain. The inner small chainring has even less usage. You easily have another several thousand KMs left on the chainrings. As for the chain and cassette, I can't tell, I'd need a gauge to measure that. Also, this bike comes with hydraulic disc brakes, that's a huge upgrade. You would usually see mechanical disc brakes with this groupset with some cheap TRP brakes...not in this case. The tires aren't stock either, those are some very nice schwalbe G-One allroads, which I had on my diverge as well and they were amazing tires. I'd be happy to get it for $1000, but if you can get it for less, by all means, try. Afterall...the guy said to throw him an offer. I'd start at $750 and see where that goes...and that would be an insane deal at that price for this.”
“I'd go with a gravel race bike with bars that accommodate clip-ons in case you actually do need it for a tri. I wouldn't get a Topstone or a Diverge -- those are too ... offroad oriented and you'd hate them in a tri (probably). In those brands, a Crux or Super Six SE would be better. Your decision largely depends on what your commute is like and how much time you'll spend off road (and what you mean by "gravel" in your area).”
