“I work in consulting and so often have to attend dinners and events with fairly senior clients. What my female colleagues and I usually do is elevate our regular work outfit just a little bit. This could mean something like more polished makeup (brighter lip or nail polish), a dressier shoe, or jewelry. Also this isn't exactly what you're asking, but when I feel fixated on what I'm going to wear, it's usually rooted in a bit of insecurity / imposter syndrome. I personally feel less self-conscious if I show up wearing clothes that I'm comfortable in, which in turn makes me more inclined to actually network and enjoy the conversations. I've never heard of this ten-second rule for first impressions, but I find being approachable and friendly is usually more important than the outfit I'm wearing.”
