Best praise vs top criticism for Repetto Cendrillon Ballet Flats
“Some general bits of guidance: good materials and quality tailoring, plus taking care of your clothes/general appearance can make a big difference toward “looking your age” in a good way. I’m 38 and I personally enjoy a lot of “young” looks like band tees, distressed details on my clothes, sneakers. But nowadays I pick better quality clothes, focusing on natural materials and thoughtful designs. I thrift and shop secondhand a lot, and some of my favorite brands are R13, Acne Studios, All Saints, and Anine Bing. In the past I was shopping more at places like Urban Outfitters and PacSun. So try to find “upgraded” versions of the looks you like. Also, when it comes to styling, if I’m going to wear something like a band tees, I’ll pair it with trousers, a denim blazer, and ballet flats. I also accessorize with nice jewelry and I make sure that my hair is styled. It’s a very different look than a band tee and ripped jeans and beat up Vans - which are all still things I love, but I wouldn’t wear them all together in one outfit anymore. Rolling out of bed and just running a brush through my hair also doesn’t work as well as it did in my 20s - I find that I look haggard if I try that nowadays, versus looking carefree like I did in my youth 😂 I don’t wear much makeup but I always make sure that my skincare is on point, I tame my brows with some brow gel and I put a little tinted balm on my lips, and I take time to style out my hair. Check out Anine Bing and Alexa Chung’s instagram pages for examples of what I mean ❤️”
“In my 20s (circa the 2010s), I wore shell tops with cardigans or flowy blouses (not button ups) on top. I had mostly black slacks or skinny dark pants on the bottom and ballet flats. Now in my 30s (the 2020s) I wear a lot of the same tops and added some oversized satin button-ups, and mostly now I wear blazers instead of of cardigans. I've got my tried and true slacks from before, and added some high-waisted pairs. Also brought in some cropped slacks that show my ankles (I live in a warm climate). For shoes I usually wear loafers or kitten heel pumps. Ballet flats don't usually have thick enough soles for my tired feet and knees 😅 For context I work in an office with a good split of men and women, but it's all computer nerds which means being too fashion forward or slaying too hard actually might hurt your credibility. Can't look too much like Daphne, because it means you can't think like Velma. Or something I don't know people are prejudiced and weird. I also wear some Cakes Body pasties inside my bra because I don't like my nipples showing. I have hangups about my chest thanks to getting too much attention for it in my younger years 😞 people are terrible to women about our bodies, no matter the shape. So yeah in conclusion my work wardrobe is about 60% dictated by my colleagues' expectations and biases, and then 40% by my own tastes. Vintage Ann Taylor holds up way better than the newer stuff. Anything new I buy I try to find natural materials like cotton, linen, etc. polyester has its place because I hate ironing, but the plastic clothes have a quality spectrum of their own so I try to be mindful about that.”
