Best praise vs top criticism for Philips Fidelio X3
“They're honestly better than people think. Only real issues are Philips not being supportive of replacement parts (e.g., pads) and the weird wiring they have. Other than that, they sound good, feel good, and are built like tanks. Reviews on their release were negative mostly because they didn't follow the X2 sound sig and were released at an MSRP of $350. I think that's bogus because certain reviewer(s) that hated the X3's change to a more neutral sound sig also criticized the X2 for having the tilt that it had and wanting a more neutral revision; so Philips was just going off bad feedback for those reviews. Also, the X2 originally MSRPed at $300. So I don't think that the $350 MSRP for a much better built and "technically" sounding headphone wasn't that big of a jump. Having said that, it was a bit tone deaf given that the HD6xx was well onto the field at <$200 and the Sundara was king at $350 at the time. Even so, at the current $160ish price new (and gets lower with sales, B-stocks, etc.), the X3 is a good pick that should get recommended more often.”
“I would strongly recommend getting X2/X2HR over X3. I've had all three and I can say that the X2(HR) headphones are my all time favorites out of all the headphones that I've tried, while the supposedly newer and better X3s are IMO actually worse in every way. The X3s feel more plasticky and less durable, are way less comfortable and got a weird sound that is hard to describe, like they're trying to imitate the sound of the X2s but just falls flat.”
