Best praise vs top criticism for Origami Dripper
“There is a pretty massive difference between these filters and Chemex, in terms of how much they absorb and block, of course. A standard Chemex filter is going to absorb a good 10g of liquid, which isn’t much if you are using a Chemex to brew for a couple of people at once but is a fair proportion of the brewing water if you are brewing a smaller quantity (like my typical 300g of water for myself). My reason for rinsing bleached filters is mostly for holding the filter in place, though. Not a biggie in something like a Kalita in an Origami holder or a V60 that deliberately holds the filter from the walls of the filer holder, but I want to create a bit of a seal to my Chemex.”
“The Orea Z1 is an alternative brewing method. It does the same thing (more or less) a French press does, though differently. That might be a good gift if your friend is interested in branching out. This coffee source that wants $300 shipping must be some super exclusive supplier, I assume? So you're considering gifting some outrageous, rare, "high end" coffee. That's a tough call. Buying coffee for a coffee aficionado is a lot like buying a book, I like to say. "Hey, I hear you like books. Here's a book. Hope you like it." It *might* be a hit 😅 but first you should pump your friend for details about what kind of coffee to get. [Here is a trendy Typica mejorado coffee from a well-known producer and a respected roaster](https://september.coffee/en-us/products/pepe-jijon-ty-oxy-ecuador-late-harvest-2025) for $52 / 200 grams. Shipping is $12-ish. That might be a revelation or a terrible waste of money, depending on your friend's preferences. I think a "sensory" or "tasting" cup is a pretty safe gift for a coffee nerd. They are designed to concentrate aroma, enhance flavour. Here's [a recent testimonial on Reddit](https://reddit.com/r/pourover/comments/1mfed2f/finally_got_a_sensory_cup/). Several companies make such things: Orea, Origami, Kruve, Ovalware. Personally I use and like a double-walled (air-insulated) borosilicate glass by Ovalware. There is something to be said for pink ceramic however.”
