Best praise vs top criticism for Nautilus Equipment Mat
“This is the sort of equipment my dad used to use at the local Nautilus and fancy business hotels in the 80s. I'd love to own this.”
“They use different drive mechanisms. The Hammer Strength is a much simpler design that relies on bearings, counterweights, and rubber straps to control the movement pattern. The vintage Nautilus equipment uses chains, gears, and (sometimes) a tensioner to avoid the counterweights. Some Nautilus machines even have a foot lever to assist the first rep, since there would be no rebound mechanism like on subsequent reps. My Hammer Strength machine is only a couple of years old, and it is plate loaded. The Nautilus one that I had would be close to 40 years old if I still had it, and it had a weight stack somewhere around 200 pounds. Unfortunately, all pullovers are hard to find. They are a niche piece of equipment because the lat pulldown and pullups do a decent enough job stimulating the lats for the casual gym goer or powerlifter. However, there is simply no better way to pre-exhaust the lats than a pullover since you can alleviate the bicep, grip, and core fatigue that comes with a lat pulldown or barbell row. With the lat-pulldown machine and a leg-extension machine, it is the one piece of equipment I will never give up because there is simply no similar way to replicate the pullover and truly isolate the lats with a barbell or dumbbells.”
