Best praise vs top criticism for ifi Zen DAC
“Yeah the sound is incredible but I wish the pads were much softer, but it appears that the pads are doing some heavy lifting for the tuning. I can't guarantee whether you'll hear a big difference, but a cheap DAC/Amp combo like the iFi Zen DAC (i use) is a good idea for a collection of headphones that are not ridiculously expensive or hard to drive yet. I find no audible difference going to a balanced cable, aside from more volume which I don't want because these are already very power sensitive.”
“So, while I don't have any experience with your 660S2, I do have experience with the predecessor of your Zen DAC, I have the V2. The single-ended output on it absolutely *sucks* and will not drive anything properly. The Zen is a decent DAC but a thoroughly mediocre amp. (Their official website even acknowledges this as they file the Zen under their dedicated DAC section, not the DAC/Amps!) As it happens though, the 660S2 should come with a balanced 4.4mm cable as well as the standard one and the native balanced output on the Zen is much better (though still mediocre compared to competing DAC/Amps at the same price - but it will be good enough). This normally wouldn't make any difference to the sound but the single-ended conversion circuit is just *that* bad on the Zen. I would try the headphone with your other balanced cable and see if you have a better experience with it. Just remember that balanced outputs don't normally drastically improve performance of a headphone like this, it's a "quirk" of the Zen DAC range. Pairing it with its sister CAN dedicated Amp would also work but shouldn't be required in this case.”
