Best praise vs top criticism for GT Grade Carbon X
“> From the (admittedly very cursory) research I've done so far it sounds like a hybrid bike might be what I'm looking for - comfortable for on-road use but able to handle light off road use. You are on the right track here. There's a couple of different types of bikes that could suit you well here depending on your preferences. If you mostly just want to ride on the road or dirt paths and want wide, flat handlebars, get: * A traditional commuter/fitness hybrid bike with a flat handlebar - Specialized Sirrus, Trek FX, Cannondale Quick If you want something a little sportier than that for some mild trail riding: * A flat bar gravel bike/rigid mountain bike - State All-Road flat bar, Specialized Sirrus X, Trek FX Sport, Canyon Roadlite, Salsa Journeyer flat bar, Surly Preamble/Ogre If you want something more comfortable: * A comfort hybrid (think a beach cruiser with gears and disc brakes) - Cannondale Treadwell, Specialized Roll If you are open to drop bars, which allow multiple hand positions on longer rides: * A relaxed geometry drop bar all-road bike that can fit at least 35cm tires - State All-Road, Trek Domane, Salsa Journeyer, Surly Straggler, Specialized Allez If you want drop bars and good off-roading (differences between these and the allroads above are more on what groupset they use and price bracket) * A gravel bike with drop bars and mixed-surface tires - Cannondale Topstone, GT Grade, Specialized Diverge, Canyon Grizl, Trek Checkpoint,”
“I have test rode a couple bicycles near me - the drop handle bars didn't bother me but I'd imagine I wouldn't know any of this until I started to live with the bike and go on longer rides. I ride supersport motorcycles, but I feel this still wouldn't be a good indicator of if I could handle a more tucked position simply because on a motorcycle there is a tank that you can hug with your thighs/legs - it makes it a heck of a lot easier on your hands. I appreciate you letting me know that mechanical brakes are nothing to be avoiding necessarily. I may have been doomscrolling bicycling posts about mechanical vs hydraulic brakes a bit too much and too hard and come away with the idea that they are nightmare to live with due to the constant adjusting to get a decent feeling out of them. There is an old stock revolt 2 near me on sale for 1400CAD - would that be a great place to start in the sport and get good value for money? Would you recommend the GT Grade Comp over the revolt for an approx 200CAD increase in price? Im wishing there was a magical purchasing fairy that could just take my money and give me a bike that is enough but not too much. :)”
