Best praise vs top criticism for Daiwa Tatula
“As far as reels go, Shimano and Daiwa command a premium price, but are generally excellent performers and have a reputation for being extremely reliable long term. I won a $200 Cabela's gift card at a raffle at work and picked up a Daiwa Procyon MQ. It's only a 1000 size reel (I do a lot of finesse fishing for Walleye and Perch), and it was christened with a solid 10lb Pike and a half dozen 20+ inch walleye last weekend. I'm extremely impressed with it so far. My 10 year old Daiwa Tatula and 12 year old Shimano Stradic have hauled in hundreds of walleye, pike and perch over the years. My dad finally replaced his 25 year old Shimano level-wind with a new model last year, and his old one still gets used when we bring people with us. When in doubt, Shimano and Daiwa are very safe bets.”
“I know what you mean, I lost my 4 best combos last year due to negligence in a moment of exhaustion. This is even more frustrating because I can't forgive myself for it and I'm not rich enough to replace that gear at the snap of my fingers. That being said, I did manage to come up with some solutions after lengthy research and bought new gear this spring. Incidentally, I wanted to build at least one combo that was light and sensitive enough for panfish and trout yet strong and powerful enough if bigger fish decided to bite. My solution was a Daiwa Tatula XT 6'8 Medium Lite paired with a Shimano Nasci 2500. It's on the heavy side for crappie and trout but I get a lot of bass and pike everywhere I fish. Still extremely sensitive for panfish though. Ideally, for crappie and trout you would go with a lite or ultralite setup, moderate action rod and 1000 to 2000 size reel. I have a 7'6" light moderate Fenwick HMG on standby if needed. That being said, you didn't mention a budget. If it's tight and the combo I mentioned is above your intended budget, consider a Daiwa Aird-X rod with a Shimano Sahara or a Daiwa Legalis reel as the next best option at a more budget friendly pricepoint.”
