Best praise vs top criticism for Sony a6100
“AF on the 6000 is pretty good. I've shot airshows with it and got good results. Outdoors and in decent lighting it's really good. It falls down a bit in two specific areas: I never liked the AF-C mode. I always thought the tracking left something to be desired, so I always used Single Shot Autofocus (AF-S). Again, I shot fast moving planes like the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and an F-22 in AF-S and it did quite well, but don't expect modern Eye Autofocus (there is a hidden Eye AF that works OK). The tracking might be OK, but since I always saw really good results in AF-S, I just left it in that mode. The other area is low light. When shooting indoors at lamplight (and at f/1.4) it really does not do very well. It constantly hunts for focus and the orange lamp was frequently obscured by even fairly short lenses (Sigma 30mm). Going to the A6700 really was a breath of fresh air in my dark house since I was so frustrated with the 6000. With the A6700 I'm more likely to get motion blur than to actually miss focus. Honestly, the A6000 is an awesome camera that I loved for nearly 10 years, and anyone reading this shouldn't be discouraged from buying one. If you can afford the 6100 it's probably the better pick, but if you can save that money for lenses and you're not planning on shooting primarily in the super dark or relying on intense eye tracking the A6000 is still a nice camera.”
“I’m on a similar journey. Had an a5000 for 3 years now. Got 3 lenses but finding the AF slow and hate that I don’t have a viewfinder in bright light. Can’t afford a 6500 or 6600 so looking at the 6100 2nd hand. Seems to be a huge improvement to the a590”
