Best praise vs top criticism for Rolex Explorer 124270
“OP this is a very special watch. This watch started out as a white "Polar" dial, and over time the dial turns this incredibly desirable cream color. Early versions of this watch are the only ones where the dial patinas this way because of materials that they used at the time. Objectively a high end watchface changing colors and deteriorating like this is a bad thing, but since the result is a desirable outcome, and it's a vintage Rolex, it makes it more desirable. (Look into spider dials for a similar mistake that collectors cherish.) IIRC the cream dial Explorer 2's value varies quite a bit due to there being two different dial types, and it's deep into the rabbit hole of vintage Rolex. If the "C" in both "CHRONOMETER" and "CERTIFIED" perfectly line up vertically, then you have what's called a "Rail Dial." If they don't then it's your standard cream dial. It looks like you have a standard cream dial which is still very valuable, and IMO quite beautiful. I'm not sure if you're into watches, but I would recommend you wear it and cherish it as an heirloom. This watch on its own is very special, but since it's your father's I would assume that makes it even more so. If you get it serviced please do your due diligence and don't let them polish out the scratches, and replace anything that isn't broken. Lots of people advise against sending vintage watches like this to Rolex for service because they usually service a watch to bring it to like new condition, which means they will replace parts with patina, and polish out the scratches. Not only will this reduce the value, it will also take away what is physically special about this watch. Instead try to find a reputable vintage Rolex specialist and advise them to preserve the watch in its current condition. Also I'm not an expert, just a dude who dreams about watches like this so if anyone wants to correct me please do so.”
“The Explorer, and I owned one. IDK why this subreddit cums over it, they say they hate Rolex because of 'marketing' but that the Explorer 1 is the one Rolex they respect... But the Explorer 1 is literally a marketing watch which they said they hate lol. It has absolutely nothing to do with its origin story. It's based off another watch in the catalog which is the Oyster Perpetual which was based off a false narrative.”
