tldr; The NYC uniform - instantly recognizable sandalwood and cucumber. Smells like a boutique hotel. Overexposed in cities but still well-crafted.

Best praise vs top criticism for Le Labo Santal 33
“As someone who buys a lot from a niche store, let me tell you what I like about the store… they don’t pressure. If I say I don’t like a particular note, they don’t try to convince me of it. I hate Santal 33 and anything that resembles it. So don’t try to find something close to it that I might like. I don’t want to be in a sports arena with someone wearing it, let alone getting something close to it. Listen to what they like. Offer suggestions based on their wants, not yours. Feel free to offer suggestions. But realize some people will just be different. Honestly, one thing I genuinely like… when the salesperson admits they don’t like something. You don’t have to like everything. But it drives me crazy when the reps at Neimans are there, because of course the Amouage rep thinks the Amouage line are ALL incredible. 🙄 I initially hated Amouage. My favorite niche perfumery owner told me that maybe I would like Overture Woman, as opposed to the man’s version. I only tried the male versions. She admitted she couldn’t stand the male version and she said everyone buys Woman, because it’s quite unisex and so much better. This one hit me and I loved it. I bought Overture Woman, which we might not have tried, if not for her honesty. My wife and I now have 4 Amouage- two men and two women (one is on the way).”
“I distinctly recall an early evening in 2017, on a street corner in the east village, waiting for the light to turn and being absolutely choked out by the 7-10 women also waiting to cross the street wearing santal 33. Le labo on orchard would also burn the huge santal candle all day long, with their doors propped open May-late October. It either mingled with, or overpowered, the hot garbage juice smell, depending on when trash pickup was. ”
