Best praise vs top criticism for Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2) 47mm
“Pretty sure you meant Epix Gen 2. As all you are interested in is Hiking I suspect your main driver in regards to these 3 watches is around gps and maps..... Epix has the best gps then Amazfit T-Rex 3 (ATR3), then GT5P. Navigation - you have the two main types of systems offered: 1) offline route navigation - you create the route on an app or the web and then sync it to your watch, you then select that route and the watch will provide TBT directions. If you go off route then you will get a notification and bearing line to get you back on route. They all offer this. 2) offline navigation - you can create an offline route on the watch itself whether by selecting a point on the map or whether by using built in POI or POI/waypoints that you have added. The watch will create the route and included TBT instructions (visual with vibration/beep notifcation and with audio instruction). Only garmin offers this on their Fenix (and variants range like the Epix) and the top end forerunner series (i..e FR965 / FR955). Personally I prefer and love the Epix's ability to create routes on the fly, especially as for option 1 you can set the options so that a) you follow course and if go off route you get notification and bearing line to get back on or b) you set to map use in which case if you go off route it will reclac your route (you can change this option on the fly while using navigation). Maps: being a while since I checked the GT5P's maps but remember them being reasonably basic in terms of detail provided; ATR3 are ok but again fairly limited in tems of info; Epix maps are a beast, in some ways there can be too much info on, especially in built up areas - love the terrain feature as really helps you understand what the contours are showing. In the UK the amount of detail and trails etc included is pretty good - in some countries like Germany (Bavaria) it isn't as good but still more than adequate to use - just didn't have the same level of recreational/geographic POI detail as the UIK (trails were all there though). Its worth noting that this isn't the only navigation modes the Epix offers - it also offers reference point navigation (i.e. compass bearing line); Sight n Go - projecting waypoint (selecting a visible location i.e. windmill on top of hill a couple of km away); Around me - gives a pie chart of POI around you - useful if you want to know the nearest atm for example, and then get TBT directions to it. Suunto Race S also offers offline maps with offline route navigation - not much detail on the maps - but very good if you like trail running and will work for hiking. Coros Pace Pro - massive battery life, offline route navigation with offline maps. Polar vantage m - includes offline maps and offline route navigation. Just to make your choice a bit more challenging.”
