Best praise vs top criticism for Carrier Smart Thermostat
“We just replaced our 16 year old 2.5 ton unit because the coil went out and would be $2k to fix. It was a little overwhelming deciding what to do because time was not on our side. I also talked to a retired HVAC friend who admittedly didn’t know much about the latest and greatest units but reassured me that replacing was the best option. They gave us a choice of 2 different units that would fit (attic space) and we agonized a bit over a 19 SEER Bosch (tax credit eligible) or a 15 SEER Trane (not tax credit eligible). In the end we chose the old school Trane bc my brother in law advised that the Bosch has an inverter system that is “nice until it’s not.” I also did extensive searching on Reddit and HVAC forums for reviews and came to the same conclusion. My advice is to get estimates from several companies now, before you are left without a reliable heat source for 2 weeks in winter (hi!). Ideally I would have liked to compare other brands like Carrier that another local company sells, but time was not on our side. I would expect an estimate to be somewhere between 13-18k, or maybe less bc your unit is smaller than mine. Research the exact models they quote. I’m not sure if the tax credits expire this year because of the Big Beautiful Bill. But at least you will have a range and can plan your finances accordingly. As far as finding a reputable company, go on Facebook and ask. Search your local community groups and check google reviews.”
“I don’t think so because many major manufacturers partner with them including carrier but everyone here thinks it’s garbage because it’s made in china. Meanwhile probably 80% of the worlds hvac come from them and Gree. With that being said I happen to like that Goodman equipment. More importantly is the installer competent enough to wire it up properly. So many screw up the wiring In return you don’t get a truly communicating system losing a lot of efficiency. I would ask them how many they done. If you decide on the Goodman ask them to install the Amana equivalent which is the same equipment because the warranty is even better. They replace the unit not fix it. Goodman/Amana are essentially the same even down to the model numbers.”
